Fine print №1
“Full Coverage” (~$10/day) is a reimbursement product, not insurance.If there’s damage, you pay the rental desk first, then claim it back from DiscoverCars (within 28 days, up to ~$3,300). It covers excess, glass, tires, keys and towing — not interior damage, mechanical parts, cleaning or off-road.
Fine print №2
The desk will still block a deposit on your card.Full Coverage is invisible to the local rental company — expect the hold, and expect a hard sell of their own waiver. Declining it is fine; that’s exactly what the coverage is for.
Skip the coverage if your credit card already includes rental CDW (many travel cards do), or you can’t float the deposit until reimbursement.
Prebook the ride — sometimes.
Kiwitaxi locks a fixed price at booking, tracks your flight, and waits 90 free minutes after landing. Worth it in exactly four situations:
Late-night landings
Thin ride-hail supply plus surge pricing at 1am is where fixed prices win.
Groups & luggage
Five people with bags need a bookable minivan, not Uber XL roulette.
Child seats
Reservable in advance — nearly impossible with street taxis.
Scam-prone taxi lines
A driver holding your name beats negotiating at arrivals in an unfamiliar alphabet.
Skip it if you’re solo with a carry-on, landing in daylight in an Uber-dense city — ride-hail will usually be cheaper. That’s most trips, honestly.
Flight first. Always.
Fares move hourly; hotel prices move daily and cancel free. Lock the deal, then book a refundable room while you plan.
Pro move: filter for “free cancellation”, book the safe option the same hour you ticket the flight, and keep hunting — you can always trade up later at zero cost.
